Control Problem

Don't know if this groups is still alive?

I'me tyring to get Battlezone to work on my Win XP
laptop. The game loads and runs but I can't move.
The controls selection screen shows either nothing
or gibberish for the control kets. If I reassign them
they get overwritten by gibberish again!?

All I get is a stationary ship in front of me (for the
training excercise). I've tried the patches and changing
drivers with no luck. Anyone have any other ideas?

What patches have you installed? Did you install from the BZClub site
updates? The controls screen should not be garbled as it is a static bitmap
and should not have been touched by any patch that I know of. When changing
drivers, how far back in driver versions did you go? Who makes your video
card? What model?

Thanks for the reply. I think maybe I was a little unclear. The actual
controls screen
background is fine, only the parts which show the actual defined keys is
garbled.
For instance the move forward may show nothing or something like $%^&. If I
try and reset to defaults, all the key areas go blank. If I go back to the
game screen
its impossible to move, but the game is definitely still running. If I
redefine the keys,
the new definitions have no effect and are gone when I return to the
controls screen.

I'm running the original v1.0 CD. I've tried the 1.4 patch, the unofficial
1.8 and also
the large assets. I'm running a Portege PIII 500 with a Savage IX. This runs
other
games like Half Life and Star Raith fine. I've tried many different graphic
drivers,
although I'm not sure it's a graphic problem. More of a controls. It's as if
the keyboard
setting file (where ever that is) is getting corrupted.

I've also tried renaming the Anim folder, as it said somewhere the files
won't play on XP?

Also, just thought I'd mention it, I got hold of Battlezone II and this runs
fine.

only just :)

Try right clicking the icon. Choose Properties. Click the Compatability tab
and select Win98. Click OK, exit this window, restart your PC and have
another go. Post whether this works.

If you've already installed the 1.4 patch, delete the "Anims" folder
(located in the main Battlezone directory). The animated .avi's are what
cause the UE when attempting to join a game. You will no longer see the
rotating tanks just prior to actually entering a game.
That will allow you to play, but there are still some issues. If you have
difficulty connecting to games or staying connected to the lobby and/or
games, you can try an anti-lag patch which some claim helps. Only use the
patch if you must, because some report it can actually cause connection
problems. Get the patch here... heed my warning about the patch, ignore

Regardless, you can no longer play BZ 100% problem free under WinXP.

You'll

be lucky to eke out 70% problem free. I use a dual boot setup (XP/98sp2)
just so I can continue playing BZ. No other reason... just to play BZ.
